Looking on life’s bright side

Good evening! Ladies and Gentlemen. It’s a great honor for me to be here. What I’d like to talk about today is “l(fā)ooking on life’s bright side.” When encountering difficulties in life, some of us will feel despressed and even choose to bury their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, this attitude will not do you any good, because if you don’t even have courage to face them, how can you have the chance to conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, as it can bring you confidence and help you get through the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, “An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.” To give an example, when I was 15, there was something wrong with my right ear. There was a tumor in it. So I had to have an operation. After that, I lost my hearing. Now you can see a scar beside my right ear. At first, I was very sad and just stayed at home every day. I was wondering why it is so unfair to me. But after a long talk with my father, I realised I was so lucky, I still have one ear to listen to the sounds of the world. I also have eyes, arms and so on. I can still do whatever I want to do, and this experience also made me believed that everyone has bad luck and good luck, the man who stays optimistic through bad luck is the man who is ready to receive good luck when it comes. As you can see, I am the man, and how lucky I am now. For instance, I can play games, listen to music and enjoy everything in life. Most luckily, I have this chance to talk with all of you.
My dear friends, stay optimistic, and you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardships, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success. To illustrate this point. Take for example, Thomas Edison who was considered by many to be an optimist; otherwise, the light of hope in his heart could not have brightened the whole world. Alfred Nobel kept a good spirit of optimism towards life; otherwise, the explosive and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have came into being. And Lance Armstrong, another optimist usually look on life on the bright side; otherwise, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; this would depend on your attitude only, and so does success, and life also depends on your attitude. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then there are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; there are more bridges than obstacles! To finish, I’d like to share this with you: if winter comes, can spring be far behind. So, my dear friends, never lose hope. Never fear challenges. Always look on the bright side of life. Just believe, optimism can overcome any difficulties in your life.
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your listening.
Success isn’t just a name
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, it’s a great honor for me to be here. What I’m going to talk about today is “Success isn’t just a name”.
So, what is success? It is often too easy to define success as something related to fortune, status and power. So it is not surprising that people say success is a case of being a big name on Wall Street or an outstanding scientist. But are fortune, status and power the only criteria for success? The answer is absolutely not. Success can be achieving our own personal goals, or living up to our own personal expectations. Success isn’t just a name.
As for the definition of success, People have different understanding of it, because the hopes and ideals they cherish vary from one to another. From where I stand, I think challenging myself and fulfilling my potential would be my great success. When I was at primary school, I showed little interests in English, so my English was poor. What’s worse, after learning English for 3 years, I mixed the word “number” with the word “Name”. Unfortunately, I got zero in the final test for writing my name at the place of “number”. After being laughed at by my fellow students, I made up my mind to learn English well. To speak fluently and correctly, I kept imitating a tape every single day and tried to remember new words with my whole heart and soul. After three months of hard work, I found I’d made great progress, and even fallen in love with English. Up until now, I am still in the habit of reciting a paragraph of an English article before sleeping. Where there is a will, there is a way. I was chosen as the president of our school’s English speech association. And most importantly, I got the chance to stand here today.
So for me, success means the way I rise up to challenges. It lies in every process and every aspect of life. You needn’t be a Bill Gates to be successful. If you face up to the challenge whatever they may be and get yourself to where you’d like to be, you are a success.
