China--the market with the biggest potential in the 21st century

The year 2001 was not an optimistic one for the world economy. The United States and Japan, which were described as the power engine of the world economy, suffered from a decline in economic growth, which led to the slow- down of the global economic development. Against this background,the Chinese economy, however, maintained sustainable and healthy development because of the proactive fiscal policy and the policy of expanding domestic demand initiated by the Chinese Government. In 2001, the gross domestic product(GDP) of the country increased by 7.3% as compared with the previous year. For the first 6 months, 2002, the state investment increased by 16.3%; foreign investment in the country rose by 15.6%.
